Sangam classical literature of Purapadalghal is one of the oldest Tamil anthologies. Typically, Sangam literature comprised Ettitogai (eight anthologies) and Pattupatuu (an anthology of ten long verses). The collection has numerous verses composed by several poets. This category of Sangam Classical poems focuses on the heroism and related events that inspired the poems. Other themes include beauty, culture, ethics, god worship, vows made by kings, courtesy, bravery, words of wisdom for kings, civilization and all aspects of day-to-day living. Puram poems reflect the Tamil community's culture and traditions.
