We aim to equip our students with the skills and expertise required to study the fascinating subject of Language via our faculty, who bring different perspectives to bear on the phenomenon of Language and whose varied interests and approaches are reflected in the courses offered:
- Foundational courses that enable students to work in rigorous, informed and appropriate ways
- Interface courses that cover, in varying degrees of detail, language use and its connections with the mind, physiology, computer applications, knowledge and ideology. There is also the possibility for graduate students to take courses from other departments in the Faculty.
Objectives: all our graduate students should expect
- to acquire a developed expertise in this area of language studies.
- to possess an understanding of the discipline's wider concerns and of the points of intersection with other disciplines.
What You'll Learn
The Master of Arts (English Language and Linguistics) is a fully taught program, designed to be completed in one year of intensive full-time study, or over a longer period of part-time study. Only those locally domiciled are eligible for part-time study.
To obtain the MA in English Language and Linguistics, candidates are required to:
- pass a minimum of 40 units or ten courses (each course is worth 4 units). The ten courses (40 units) must include ELC5104, Approaches to Language.
- Candidates may take up to two 5000 or 6000-level courses from other departments, and up to two 4000-level courses in EL, subjected to the approval of the Head of Department.
- Candidates who have completed equivalent courses which were not used towards obtaining another degree prior to admission to the MA (English Language and Linguistics) may apply to the Head of Department for an exemption of course(s), subject to a maximum of 50% of the MA requirements.
- obtain a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 for all examinable courses. The candidature of a student will be terminated if he/she:
- obtains a GPA of less than 2.5 for two consecutive semesters, or less than 3.0 for three consecutive semesters; or
- fails more than two courses
- fulfil 50% residency in Singapore.
