What You'll Learn
The withdrawal of British troops from Singapore left the island with the question of what to do with these barracks and military administrative buildings. Should they be demolished, or preserve? And should they be preserved, how would these buildings be best utilised? This was a real conundrum for Singapore.
The course examines this issue from a historical perspective, with a review of British colonial planning with regards to the defence of Singapore from external military threats. This is followed by an analysis of how Singapore government transformed these heritage buildings into elegant, versatile spaces and new lifestyle enclave in tourism development.
