Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru

Nigeria’s drive to expand access to specialised agricultural education and to boost food security received a significant push in 2020 with the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru, in Kebbi State. The university was conceived to fill a specific gap: equipping students with practical, research-backed knowledge in agriculture, environmental science, and related fields, directly addressing the needs of a region where farming and livestock are central to livelihoods. Recognised by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the institution operates full-time under a semester-based academic calendar, a structure that allows for focused study periods and periodic assessment of student progress.

Though still young, the university has begun building its academic programmes around core faculties that reflect its agricultural mandate. Departments are expected to span disciplines such as crop science, animal production, fisheries, agricultural economics, soil science, and forestry, among others. As with all NUC-accredited federal universities, admission is gained through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (UTME), followed by a screening process specific to the institution. Given its specialised focus, prospective students should demonstrate a solid background in the sciences at the secondary school level.
