At the end of the course,participants will be able to:
- Develop a basic working knowledge of income tax and goods and services tax (GST) issues faced by companies and individuals, including the rules for deductions, capital allowances, and treatment of losses;
- Analyze the taxation of income from employment, trade, and investments, and evaluate tax planning opportunities arising from differences in tax treatment of sole proprietors, partnerships, and companies;
- Examine the acceptability and implications of tax avoidance strategies within the context of deductions, capital allowances, and losses, and understand the legal boundaries of tax planning;
- Understand and discuss key concepts in tax policy, including the economics of taxation, international trends, and tax reform, to critically evaluate and assess the impact of tax policies on individuals, businesses, and the economy.

This foundation course seeks to acquaint participants with a basic working knowledge of income tax and goods and services tax issues faced by companies and individuals. It will illustrate the extent to which tax avoidance is acceptable under the rules for deductions, capital allowances and losses. In addition, the taxation of income from employment income, trade and investments will be highlighted. Tax planning opportunities arising from the differences in tax treatment of sole proprietors, partnerships and companies will be highlighted. On policy issues, concepts including economics of taxation, international trends and tax reform will be covered.

A good Bachelor's or Juris Doctor degree in Law
